Germanium is like Silicon but its color has a greenish tinge. It rarely appears in high concentration and is named after the country of Germany because of the origin of the scientist who discovered it. Uses include fiber-optic systems, infrared optics, solar cell applications along with many others. Germanium is not essential for any living organism.
